In the week ending January 30, 2026, U.S. energy companies extracted an unprecedented 360 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas from storage, prompted by increased heating demands due to an Arctic cold snap. While this draw is the largest on record, it fell slightly short of expectations. By comparison, during the same week the previous year, the extraction was 195 bcf, with the five-year average at 190 bcf for this period. With this substantial withdrawal, stockpiles decreased to 2.463 trillion cubic feet, which is 1.7% higher than the same week last year, yet 1.1% below the five-year average for the week. In the preceding week that concluded on January 23, utilities had withdrawn 242 bcf from storage.
