07.08.202605:04:00UTC+00Japan Coincident Index Notches 6-Year Peak

Japan's coincident economic index, a key barometer of current conditions derived from indicators such as industrial production, employment, and retail sales, inched up to 118.2 in June 2026 from 117.9 in May, preliminary data showed. This was the highest reading since May 2019 and signaled a continued moderate economic recovery. Private consumption picked up as improving employment and income conditions supported household spending, while consumer sentiment showed signs of stabilizing. External demand also strengthened, with exports increasing against a backdrop of subdued imports, although the outlook remained uncertain amid developments in the Middle East and other global risks. Fiscal policy continued to support the economy following Japan's approval of a second consecutive record-high state budget. At the same time, the Bank of Japan maintained an accommodative policy stance even after raising its short-term policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.0% in June, the highest level since September 1995.
